How to Add Google Maps to WordPress Without an API Key

Show a working Google map in WordPress with no API key or billing account — how the keyless embed works, its limits, privacy, and when to add a key.

To add Google Maps to WordPress without an API key, install the free GeoVerse Maps plugin, insert its block and search for your address. You get a standard embedded Google map — no Google Cloud console and no billing account. It shows one location; add a free API key later for custom markers, styles, search, filters and directions in the same block.

Option 1: the GeoVerse Maps block

  1. Install and activate GeoVerse Maps.
  2. Edit a page, click + and search for GeoVerse Maps or map.
  3. Insert the block and search for your address.
  4. Set the zoom and the height (separately for desktop, tablet and mobile).
  5. Publish.

Without a key, the block renders Google's standard embedded map in an iframe with lazy loading, so it doesn't load until a visitor scrolls near it.

Option 2: paste Google's embed code

  1. Open Google Maps, find your place, click Share → Embed a map and copy the HTML.
  2. In WordPress, add a Custom HTML block and paste it.

This works, but you edit raw HTML, the height isn't responsive without extra CSS, and there's no upgrade path to markers or filters.

Privacy

Any Google map loads from Google's servers, so the visitor's browser connects to Google, which may set cookies. List Google Maps in your privacy policy. If you run a cookie consent tool, check whether it blocks embeds until consent.

OpenStreetMap-based plugins such as MapPress and WP Store Locator run without a Google key. We compare them in our round-up of WordPress map plugins.

Common Questions

Yes. Install the free GeoVerse Maps plugin, insert its block and search for your address. Without a key it shows a standard embedded Google map of that location. You can also paste an embed code from Google Maps into a Custom HTML block.

A keyless embed shows one location with Google's standard look. Several custom markers, custom icons, map styles, a search box, category filters, directions and traffic layers all need a Google Maps API key.

Embedding a Google map this way doesn't need a billing account. With an API key, Google applies its own pricing and monthly free usage, so check Google Maps Platform's pricing page for current terms.

GeoVerse's keyless map is an iframe with lazy loading, so the browser loads it when it scrolls near the viewport instead of on page load.

The map is loaded from Google, which may set cookies and receive the visitor's IP address. Mention Google Maps in your privacy policy, and if you use a cookie consent tool, check how it treats embeds.

Yes. Add an API key in Settings → GeoVerse Maps or in the block's API Key panel, and the same block gains markers, styles, search, filters and directions.
