To build a free store locator map in WordPress, install GeoVerse Maps, add a Google Maps API key, insert the block and add a marker for each location. Put markers into categories so visitors can filter them, turn on the list view and directions, and add info windows with hours and phone numbers. For "nearest store by distance" search, use a dedicated locator.
What you'll build
- One map with every location as a marker.
- Custom icons — one per category or brand.
- Info windows with opening hours, phone, a link and a short description.
- Category filters — "Stores", "Service centres", "Pick-up points".
- A list view beside or below the map.
- Get Directions from the visitor's location.
All free in GeoVerse Maps, which has no paid version.
Step 1: get an API key
Markers, filters and directions need a Google Maps API key. Follow how to get a Google Maps API key, then paste it in Settings → GeoVerse Maps or the block's API Key panel.
Step 2: add the map
- Create a Locations page and insert the GeoVerse Maps block.
- Set the default centre and zoom to show all your locations.
- Set the height per breakpoint — taller on desktop, shorter on mobile.
Step 3: add your locations
For each branch, add a marker with:
| Field | Example |
|---|---|
| Title | WPX Coffee — Riverside |
| Address | 12 Riverside Walk, Springfield |
| Info window | Mon–Fri 7–18, Sat 8–16 · (555) 012-3456 · Order online |
| Category | Café |
| Icon | Your café icon |
Keep details identical to your Google Business Profile for each location — same name, address and phone format.
Step 4: turn on the locator features
- Category filtering so visitors can narrow the map.
- Search box to find a place on the map.
- List view for scanning.
- Directions on each marker.
- A map style that matches your brand, from the presets or your own style JSON.
Publish, then test on a phone: tap a marker, filter, and request directions.
When you need a dedicated store locator
GeoVerse is ideal for a handful to a few dozen locations. If you have hundreds of branches and visitors need "stores within 25 km of my postcode", a dedicated tool such as WP Store Locator adds radius search, per-location landing pages and opening status. Our map plugin comparison covers both.
Tips
- One page, one map. Don't scatter maps across every location page if one locator does the job.
- Use clear category names that match how customers think.
- Keep the list view on for accessibility — text is easier to scan than pins.
- Update both places when hours change: the map and your Google Business Profile.
