How to Add an Image Slider in the WordPress Block Editor (Free, No Shortcodes)

Build a responsive image slider or photo carousel in Gutenberg with captions, links and per-device settings — plus image prep and speed tips.

To add an image slider in the WordPress block editor, install the free SlideVerse plugin, insert the Image Slider & Photo Carousel block and click Add Images. Choose slides per view, arrows, dots and autoplay in the sidebar, set different numbers for desktop, tablet and mobile, and publish — no shortcodes or page builder needed.

Before you start: prepare the images

Build the slider

  1. Install and activate SlideVerse (WordPress 6.5+).
  2. Edit a page, click + and search for slider.
  3. Insert Image Slider & Photo Carousel.
  4. Click Add Images and select your photos.
  5. Open the block sidebar:
    • Slider Settings — slides per view, space between slides, transition speed, loop, centered slides, grab cursor, keyboard and mousewheel control.
    • Navigation — arrows and dots, and arrow position.
    • Autoplay Options — turn on and set the delay.
    • Effects — slide or fade.
  6. Add captions (below or as a hover overlay), tooltips and a link for each image if you need them.
  7. Switch the editor preview to tablet and mobile and adjust slides per view for each.
  8. Publish.

Full-width photo slider1 / 1 / 1FadeOn, 5 s
Gallery carousel3 / 2 / 1SlideOff

For a gallery visitors browse, leave autoplay off. For a mood slider, use fade with a slower delay.

Performance and accessibility

SlideVerse loads its slider scripts and styles only on pages that contain a SlideVerse block, and serves them from your own site — nothing from a CDN. Sliders support touch and swipe. Autoplay pauses when a visitor hovers or focuses the slider, and stays off for visitors who prefer reduced motion.

Common Questions

Install the free SlideVerse plugin, insert the Image Slider & Photo Carousel block, click Add Images and pick photos from the Media Library. Set slides per view, navigation and autoplay in the block sidebar, then publish. No shortcode is involved.

WordPress's Gallery block shows images in a grid, not a slider. For sliding images you need a slider block plugin such as SlideVerse.

Yes. SlideVerse's Image Slider shows captions below the image or as a hover overlay, adds hover tooltips, and lets you set a link for each image.

Slides per view, spacing and speed can be set separately for desktop, tablet and mobile. A common setup is 3 on desktop, 2 on tablet and 1 on mobile.

Use the same aspect ratio for every image so the slider doesn't jump in height. Around 1600 pixels wide is plenty for a full-width slider; compress them as WebP or JPEG.

A lightbox is part of SlideVerse Pro, along with popup video and 3D transitions such as coverflow and cube.
